Laser Engraving or Etched Engraving – Which One Is Best?

Choosing your wedding ring is a very important decision. Once you have done so, you have to decide how you will personalize it, which is generally done by engraving things like names, dates, or a special message inside. What few people realize, however, is that they can choose between etched engraving, which is the more traditional method, and laser engraving.

Traditional Engraving

Etched engraving is a technique that has been used for as long as engraving has existed. Essentially, a message is carved into the ring’s surface. This is also used on plaques and trophies, and anything else that can be engraved. It is a simple technique whereby an object resembling a needle, generally made from hardened steel or another very strong material, is used to etch letters and numbers into the material. Many jewelers will say that this technique is limited, and that it cannot be used on tungsten, because it is too hard. In reality, however, today’s machines often have diamond tipped needles, which means that even tungsten can be engraved.

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving is the latest technological advancement in the world of engraving. Laser marked are based in the UK and can laser engrave pretty much anything! Different types of lasers exist, but the YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) is the most popular type. The laser essentially burns into the ring’s material, rather than etching it. It can be used on all metals, from the softest gold to the hardest tungsten. It also enables different fonts and pictures and symbols to be engraved.

Which Is More Durable?

A wedding ring in particular has to last a lifetime. Hence, people search for the most durable form of engraving. Durability, however, is not down to the method of engraving, but rather down to the material of the ring itself. Soft materials like gold get scratched, which means the engraving will wear off. However, if the engraving is on the inside of the ring, it should be untouched, because your skin will always be softer than the material.

Which Is Easiest to Read?

Generally speaking, laser engraving is superior to etched engraving in terms of readability. This is because the material of the ring is burned, making it darker. However, etched engraving is deeper, which means it is also very durable.

Which Is Most Popular?

At present, traditional engraving is the most popular type of engraving. This is mainly because the majority of jewelers are most comfortable with this method. However, tungsten is becoming increasingly popular and, while it can be etched engraved as stated, it is easier to laser engrave. This is causing a rise in the popularity of laser engraving as well.

The simple fact of the matter is that choosing between etched and laser engraving is down to your own personal preference and that of the jeweler. Both are highly effective and produce tremendous results. What matters more is that the engraver is skilled at what they do, so that you get the result you are looking for.
