How to Be More Credible
How to Be More Credible

So, how do we create credibility with someone we don't know, or don't have a history with? Here are some ideas.

1."It's not bragging if you've done it." If you've earned your stripes in your business or industry, don't hide that fact under a rock. Trumpet it to add to your credibility! Drop in statements such as,

"In my seven years in this business, I've learned that ...

," or,

"I've worked with over 550 retailers, and I always find that..."

2. If you're not on commission, it doesn't hurt if they know that. Hey, I know most of...

Top 5 Interview Mistakes

Sales Tips - Sales Tips

Hiring mistakesThe sales industry is a competitive industry. If you are trying to land a job in sales, you have to put your best foot forward during the interview. Because the sales field is fickle, the interviews are often a little more intense than interviews for some other industries. If you can't sell yourself to the interviewer, you likely won't be able to sell the products, goods, or services.

The top mistake you can make when you are interviewing for a sales position is to try too hard to sell yourself. It is important that you highlight your experience and strengths; however, you must also show the interviewer that you are willing to learn. Many companies have protocol established that outlines the selling techniques you will be able to use. You have to show that you can be molded into the salesperson that meets these guidelines.

Another serious mistake you can make when interviewing for a sales job is to become too comfortable with the interviewer. Most companies want salespeople who are effective. In order to be effective, you will have to be personable and businesslike. If you are too comfortable during the interview, you may ramble or take up too much time. This can leave the interviewer wondering if you're not efficient enough for the job.

Failure to do adequate research is another mistake you can make. As a salesperson, you should have at least a basic knowledge of the products the company sells. If you are interviewing for a sales position at a furniture store, a basic knowledge of furniture and the materials used by the company is necessary.

Before you leave for the interview, check the company's website or take a visit to the company to look at the merchandise. Some points to look into when researching the company include:

* The most popular product the company sells
* The manufacturing process of the items
* The typical clientele of the company
* The sales techniques used by the company

When you go to an interview for a sales position, you should look like a salesman that the company can use. You should wear clothing that shows your professionalism. Try to emulate the type of clothing you would be required to wear if you got the job.

The final mistake you can make when you are interviewing for a sales position is to just accept what you are being told. Part of being a good salesperson is knowing what questions to ask to get the information you need. During the interview, don't be afraid to ask questions. If the interviewer says something that you need clarified, ask. Most interviewers ask applicants if they have any questions. You should ask at least one question. This shows the interviewer that you were listening and want to know more about what was said.  However, one word of caution here – do not ask questions about benefits, salary or any other such type question.  You should have already done your research and know the salary range for the position.  Asking questions like these will leave a red flag and question mark in the mind of the interviewer.

When you are interviewing for a sales job, you should always be yourself. You likely won't be a good fit for every job you apply for. As long as you keep a positive attitude and show off your skills, you will find a company that you can work for.
